The global events of 2020 have highlighted the need for functional, sanitised interior environments that are sustainable and beneficial to workers. While the concept of ”sustainable design” has been a cornerstone for architectural design for over 20 years, here at Milliken-Ontera, we look beyond the original definition of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social impacts) to consider a more people-centric approach. Our goal is to curate interior environments holistically, championing sustainability initiatives while catering to people’s physical and mental well-being.
Milliken Couture: Carpet Design with Sustainability in Mind
The work environment’s impact can linger even after you have left the space, influencing long-term health and well-being. Just as poor ergonomics can cause long-lasting injury and pain, poorly designed built environments can negatively impact an individual’s psychological and physiological well-being.
Creating interior environments with aesthetics that enhance users’ mood and well-being is Milliken Couture’s raison d’etre. Our passion is producing custom carpet designs that positively impact users, and our agile and innovative design team incorporates environmentally friendly materials across our diverse product offerings.

In light of last year’s global pandemic, we have a renewed focus on creating interior spaces that are safe and healthy and designed to bring workers together while maintaining social distancing – in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way. It may not be too soon to say that we predict a trend in carpet tile and flooring designs that reflect social distancing zoning through artful colour blocking and patterning.
Acoustics and Office Design
When the world pivoted to new ways of working in 2020, office spaces’ functionality also changed. Suddenly, the number of virtual meetings increased exponentially, placing huge importance on acoustics.
You are in physical contact with flooring at all times, and it plays a major role in noise generation. Carpet flooring types offer various acoustic ratings, and Milliken-Ontera’s cushion backing absorbs 60% more noise and transmits 50% less noise than hardback carpet. The sound absorption provided by Milliken-Ontera carpet reduces noise reverberation time and, in turn, reduces echo. This echo reduction improves speech quality, allowing for better communication in collaborative environments.
